ROME - LIVING LA DOLCE VITA

For Rome, the Jubilee year was not only an event of religious and media interest, but also a year of transformation, with huge renovation projects being carried out all over the city.

The Jubilee year was one of the most important events to happen in Rome in recent years, with two billion euros spent on public works to increase the city's appeal, including projects aimed at launching Rome as an international business city, such as the new Centro Congressi Italia and the 2,700-seat Auditorium. The city's artistic heritage has also been the subject of big projects, with its most famous museums all being improved and transformed.

There is plenty to see too on a stroll through the streets, as many of the city's most famous historic sites have been restored. Projects such as the reopening of Nero's Domus Aurea and the restoration of the Colosseum are merely a taste of works to come. Rome is also rediscovering its industrial archaeology, with the old Testaccio abattoir for example now hosting shows and cultural events, and the Montemartini power station converted into the Acea Art Center.

Rome's nightlife is also something to be experienced. Eating is an important part of the evening, and the correct choice of venue is essential, with a wide choice including historic trattorie in the old quarters of Trastevere and San Giovanni, as well as more stylish restaurants like Quinzi and Gabrielli. Try fashionable eateries with an international flavour, such as the Riparte Cafè in Trastevere, where you can eat and dance in the surroundings of themed exhibitions. Visit one of the city's many wine bars, such as the Cul de Sac, Il Goccetto, or the Marchesi de' Frescobaldi at Fiumicino airport, a treat for travellers.
