MILAN:
DESIGN FOR LIFE
A new design store has opened in the heart of Milan's artistic
quarter, the elegant Brera district. Called Penelopi 3, it sells
exclusive Italian-made design objects and accessories, ranging
from cherry-wood tables to unusual aluminium wave-form CD holders,
coloured panels and bowls made from woven telephone wires. It
is a place of surprises, and anyone who loves new trends and
original creations will find much to discover. |
Fitted
out by one of Milan's best interior design companies, it is
situated under a beautiful stone portico, with big windows
that invite the customer to take a look. The store is divided
into two areas, one for shopping and one for exhibitions of
the work of young Italian designers.

PALERMO:
GALLERY OF TALENT
Franca Prati is one of Palermo's busiest gallery owners. In
the past she specialised in 1950s abstract, Italian pop and
19th-century art, but now works with young, up-and-coming artists,
providing them with space to exhibit and sell their creations |
Keep
an eye out for Francesco De Grandi, Alessandro Bazan, Andrea
Di Marco and Fulvio Piazza, the latest representatives of
Palermo's nouvelle vague scene. Their style is over the top,
nocturnal and artificial, their colours loud and overstated,
but the effect is without doubt magnetic.

VENICE:
BEHIND THE MASKS
An ancient craft passed down from generation to generation,
the carnival mask is one of Venice's most famous traditions,
with 300 shops plying their wares in the city alone. It is
a burgeoning market, which has exploded since the relaunch
of the Venice Carnival 20 years ago, and one of the best shops,
selling precious masks made exclusively by hand, is Mondonovo
Maschere. One
of the first workshops to open to the public, it
|
|
boasts
a collection of 600 casts in papier-mâché and porcelain. The
owner, Guerrino Lovato, is maestro d'arte at the Accademia
di Belle Arti, as well as an image historian and head of "I
Antichi", one of the companies behind the organisation of
the Venice Carnival for the last 20 years.
