Robert Gligorov Kiss the Sky
A former actor and model, and a talented illustrator and performer, Robert Gligorov (Kriva Palanka, Macedonia, 1959) is one of the most stimulating and eclectic artists on the contemporary scene. Since his first solo show, Mr. Hulk, Orange Face, and Other Stories, held at the LipanjePuntin in 1997, Gligorov’s videos, photographs, paintings, and installations have brought him to the attention of both public and critics alike. In this exhibition, as in 1997, the strength and credibility of Gligorov’s art emerge: his persistence in pursuing a single theme—that of the body—and the essentiality of his work in focusing on a single, recognizable subject—himself as the Self. Gligorov’s most frequently employed techniques include painted self-portraits, videos of himself, and auto-morphing to depict this sole, albeit protean, body. But the techniques are nothing more than supports for the work’s central conceit: the artist (his body) as point of departure and arrival, as creator of an artwork that is symbolic “in deed” but also in form, in actual substance, in its essential living being. In Kiss the Sky this thematic is extended: the living body transforms itself into an aesthetic-animalist statement. The work is a large-scale sculpture of the human body, but has been penetrated, pierced, and finally defeated by an external entity: the long, pointed nose of a fish (that of a marlin, perhaps, or a swordfish?). Thus man as techno-aggressor (sub-hunter) is reduced to the status of anonymous prey.
Besides this sculpture, a series of new photographs (c-prints) and zoomorphic objects are also on display.
