Gea Casolaro Real / Fiction
Exhibition curated by Viviana Gravano.
In her latest solo exhibition at the Galleria Estro in Padua, Gea Casolaro is showing a previously unseen piece entitled Real/Fiction, completed between 1999 and 2001. Each of the works on display is composed of a sequence of images that tell a short story—an elaboration of a brief episode to which Casolaro has been witness. Each series is accompanied by a brief caption that describes the event. In reality, however, the description given by the caption is of something completely different, providing an entirely subjective, and thus arbitrary, view of what is taking place. Yet, the events depicted in the images could feasibly meet the caption’s description. This sparks a change in perception that is typical of Casolaro’s work: reality is always the visions that each of us have of it. In this case the artist’s vision of reality is only one of a myriad possibilities. On realizing this, viewers partly identify with her vision and are partly spurred to become the free narrator of their own. In looking at Casolaro’s images, viewers seek the truth behind the story, but this ends up being only another of his countless personal interpretations. These latest works were shot in different cities throughout Europe over the course of two years as, from time to time, the artist witnessed minor events that inspired her to create a new story.
