Gianluca Sgherri
Adopting a minimal narrative approach, Gianluca Sgherri’s art explores with great lucidity what can be best defined as “mental landscapes.” A few knowingly located forms map out horizons and masses; while the profound, extremely delicate color scheme transports viewers from the chaos of the world around them and casts them into a new, harmonious universe. The calm order of this universe is never, however, inhuman. On the contrary, the image presented is one of a possible environment, one at the margins of our dreams and visions. Real domestic objects spring up mysteriously in these landscapes, taking on new symbolic meanings: ornaments, numbers, and small figures make their way through the scenes as if transplanted there without any warning, forcing us to contemplate them. The artist effects a transposition of nature using fragments that have been carefully rendered form observational drawings; leaves, stones, and small plants are thus allowed to inhabit these imaginary worlds. The resulting spacious, astral garden gives us the possibility to contemplate life in a manner normally only feasible in certain deserts. Sgherri’s work aims to create new potential environments—places where objects and humans surface unexpectedly like the first forms of life did at the very dawn of time. Not immediately obvious, this is an art that requires careful study to reveal the wealth of tiny secrets strewn throughout his paintings—mini-universes that derive their potency from new laws of alchemy.
