Federico Pietrella london frames
May 10 at the Studio d'Arte Cannaviello saw the opening of a solo show by Federico Pietrella titled london frames. Born in Rome in 1973, Pietrella currently lives and works in Milan. The works on show form part of a series that was created partly in London, a city in which the artist spent several months. Created using a variety of techniques, Pietrella’s frames require the viewer to make a concerted effort to understand a logic that extends beyond the proposal in question. Through contemplation, the order and balance of things is reestablished. The initial impetus for Pietrella’s work stems from a personal archive of photographs depicting journeys, streets, and unknown passers-by. The final pieces evolve from these photographs. On display were several large-scale canvases covered entirely with stamps on which the day, the month, and the year in which the artist was working are printed. Stamp after stamp, the poetic presented is animated by clear, decisive signs that make up the image in overlapping layers of varying intensity. In the thirteen small-scale oil paintings on show, images and words are linked to the passage of time. Other fragments from daily life take the form of little drawings created in charcoal, pastel, and sticky labels. One further frame is an object: a cube that can be handled and taken apart in the search for the stories relating to the images hidden inside. The exhibition ends with a video entitled gentleman; a metaphor for the constant search for balance.
