Studio d'Arte Cannaviello

Frank Bauer

On Tuesday June 19, the Studio d’Arte Cannaviello launched the first solo show of work by thirty-six year old Frank Bauer in Italy. Bauer was a pupil of Gerhard Richter at the Dusseldorf Academy, the city in which he still lives and works today. The starting point for Bauer’s work is a collection of photographs that that artist takes during outings with friends. Shot in houses, discos, and bars, they capture the spontaneous expressions and gestures of those depicted or informal compositions of objects.
To create his finished pieces—traditional oil-on-canvas paintings—he takes the cold, neutral image of the photograph and transforms it in paint, focusing on the element that he considers to be most central or important, and subsequently blurring what remains of the foreground and background. In the painting, therefore, Bauer is able to create the kind of atmosphere that photography alone cannot evoke.
The variously-sized works on show, which total around fifteen, depict still-life tableaux crammed with dirty plates, glasses, empty bottles, and cigarette butts: the silent remains of an event that has already taken place. Even when portraying his friends, Bauer focuses his attention on the “aftermath.” He evokes the “quiet after a storm”: the tired atmosphere of people at a party, a dinner, or a rave that is drawing to a close.
A catalogue, with a text by Mimmo di Marzio, is available for purchase in the gallery.
