Günter Umberg Esser-ci
In collaboration with the Goethe Institut Inter Nationes Mailand. Catalogue by Martina Corgnati.
Working in his own, highly individual style for many years, Umberg, born in Bonn in 1942, created this latest series of works especially for the gallery. By thoroughly questioning the order and apparent “normality” of things rather than conforming to the surrounding environment, painting assumes an exposed position that leaves the viewer no choice, forcing them to find their way (...) between two distinct fields of reality. Of these, painting, in its lapidary monochrome, constitutes the new beginning; a beginning that Malevic or Reinhardt took up without, however, taking it to its farthest extremes—layer upon layer, surface after surface—without wishing to explore the full depths of its illusoriness and substance. For this reason it is ridiculous, when standing before one of Umberg’s paintings, to speak of abstraction and inadequate to talk of monochrome. Because, in a career that spans more than thirty years of constant, persistent, and seemingly inexhaustible production, the artist has patiently developed an unparalleled ability to present the marginal, placing it firmly at the center of a reality, the experience of which only the viewer’s presence can unlock. “In fact. In being there,” as Martina Corgnati writes in the bilingual catalogue that accompanies the show, and which includes material of both an iconographic and biographical nature.
