Eugenio Tibaldi Bestiario
Umberto Di Marino Arte Contemporanea has hosted Bestiario, a solo show by Eugenio Tibaldi.
The exhibition presents around fifty of the artist’s most recent works, which explore the mores and customs of today’s society through the use of animals as a subjective point of reference. Starting with photographs taken from books and documentaries about animal life in every corner of the world, Tibaldi reworks the images, changing and disguising the subjects until they become “humanized.”
His highly ironic work does not only expose the ludicrous mores of a society based on wild consumerism and driven by a lust for status symbols, but, for the same reason, also attacks ideological stances, false symbols, and intellectualisms as ends in themselves.
Every piece is created by hand, without recourse to specialist technologies, and the overall, highly tactile effect is a delight to behold in its subtlety and delicate layering. The end result is an image that has been rendered more concrete and more precious; one that makes a strong visual impact on the viewer.
The curator of the exhibition, Simona Barucco, writes: “The Bestiario conquers viewers and will digest them. Every animal, great or small, feeds on us, on our habits, our behavior, our manias, our profoundly altered way of life, to the very essence of its being. We are nothing more than evolved/involved animals running after an identity we have lost through masquerade and mystification.
Born in Alba in 1977, Tibaldi has participated in numerous exhibitions with Valerio Berruti including Berruti&Tibaldi at the Maze gallery, Turin; Anime at La Casa dell'Arte gallery, Rosignano Solvay;
Contemporanea at the Villa Farsetti, Venice; Anamorfosi at the Photo&Co gallery, Turin; Le ombre della memoria at the En Plain Air gallery, Pinerolo; -30 at the Associazione Culturale Marcovaldo, Caraglio; and Dissonanze artistiche a confronto at the Villa Barsani Scalabrino, Como.
