Marcello Jori Gl'ori di Napoli

In the former Church of the Confessors in Giugliano, Umberto Di Marino is hosting a solo show by Marcello Jori entitled Gl'ori di Napoli,in which the artist expands his exploration of the Campania region in Southern Italy. Born in Merano in 1951, and currently resident in Bologna, Jori is one of the leading figures in contemporary art of the last decade, both in Italy and abroad. After training as a conceptual artist, it was towards the end of the ’70s that Jori found in the brilliance and seductive capacity of painting the means of creative expression best suited to his particular talents. He subsequently developed the themes that he held most dear: utopian architecture, fantastical cities, and the invention of an imaginary universe that nonetheless exudes a mildly unnerving quality. Yet, Jori is deeply aware of the “contamination” of the arts, of the constant crossover between “high” art and “low”: in an impressively short time he has made a name for himself as one of the most inventive cartoonists of our times (his plates and drawings have been printed in the sector’s most important magazines), and as a screenwriter and author (his second book, Nonna Picassa, was published at the beginning of 2000). At the former Church of the Confessors Jori presents a series of works created specifically for the occasion. There are some of his small Gioiepieces, which have been installed to form a constellation, his Città fantastiche(Fantastical Cities), two Foreste in oro (Golden Forests), a Vesuvio azzurro e argento (Green and Silver Vesuvius), as well as a number of Teatrini(Little Theaters) and the monumentalCamelot from 1991, a deeply impressive three-dimensional painting on display in the Salone delle Feste of the Palazzo Palombo. Behind the playfulness and luxurious materials, however, Jori underlines the urgent need for social dialogue. He proposes a vision of the world that cannot be perceived as consolatory, but instead invites contemplation and consideration. To complement the exhibition, a catalogue has been published which includes a text by Luca Beatrice.
