Vanessa Beecroft’s inspiration for this performance came from the international summit G8 that was held last summer in her native city of Genoa. The performance was intended as a self-portrait of the artist and marked her return to the city of her birth. Thirty black models posed in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio of the city’s Ducal Palace for three hours. Beecroft’s training as a painter and her devotion to monochrome compositions prove the impetus behind the strict uniformity of the models and of the space. One of her most spectacular and memorable performances to date, the project hoped to promote this portrait of the artist on an international level through various communicative means. A group of works from this performance was sold at a charity auction held in Paris on December 6, 2001 in aid of the International Red Cross—a private organization that provides relief for the victims of war.
Born in Italy and now resident in New York, Vanessa Beecroft is recognized as one of the most innovative young figures on the contemporary art scene. Her works have been shown in various exhibitions worldwide including the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice (2001); the Kunsthalle Vienna; the Whitney Biennial; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2000); the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sidney (1999); the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; the Spiral Wacoal Art Center, Tokyo (1999); the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (1998); the Moderna Museet, Stockholm (1998); Venice Biennale (1997); and The Institute of Contemporary Art, London (1997).
