Robert Thiele
Sculptor Robert Thiele, invigorates Miami art scene from late spring into mid-summer. Thiele’s work appears simultaneously in an extensive one-man exhibition to the Barbara Gillman Gallery, May 5 – July 5, and as part of New Work Miami series May 4 – July 15, at the Miami Art Museum.
The Barbara Gillman Gallery exhibition demonstrates the multiple nature of Thiele’s work. It is work that has both a powerful physicality as well as a mysterious and intellectual quality. It is sculpture that has been significantly influenced by painting.
Thiele himself has a complicated persona. The former professional football player is a subtle and intricate artist. Even his sculpture defies ordinary expectations. It hangs frieze like from the wall, whatever its size.
Thiele many prestigious exhibitions include the Withney Biennial in New York, the Corcoran Biennaial in Washinghton as well as exhibits in France, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain.
Art in America commented, “The sense of undivided body and soul, muscle and mind makes his new work shine with integrity”. David Ebony’s “New York Top Ten” said Thiele has the ability to apply “only one or two gracefully drawn or incised lines that lend lightness and fragility to basically massive forms”.Art in America commented, “The sense of undivided body and soul, muscle and mind makes his new work shine with integrity”. The Gillman show presents small gem like Thiele pieces as well as massive works hewn, it would seem, out of a mountain. But nothing of Thiele’s remains singular after a first close look. His abstract sculpture often suggests landscape, geology, the human form, as well as other elements and ideas. They always leave something to the imagination and interpretation of the viewer.
