Hidden Identity
This is an exhibition of paintings and photographs of people whose identities are hidden by obscuring their faces in various ways. The faces are turned from the viewer, have a mask on, are blurred or cropped out of the picture. The motivation for not revealing identity varies greatly. Some of the artists work from a psychological perspective, either individual or archetypal. Others obfuscate the face from a lack of interest in the figure as an individual and for a greater emphasis on the formal elements. In one drawing people have shopping bags on their heads as social commentary. All of these works have a hint of mystery, whether mischievous or serious, and none of the figures could be identified in a line – up.
