Sharon Switzer "Shadow Play"

Presented in conjunction with CONTACT 2001
Drawing on a vocabulary of forms associated with previous eras, Toronto artist Sharon Switzer uses contemporary technologies - digital photography, video projection, mechanical devices and audio components - to re-animate these images and objects from the past. The arrested, the still, is rejuvenated, invested with a renewed sense of vitality, dynamism and affective power. The repetitive gestures characterizing the artworks in Shadow Play echo the circularity of history, the rhythmic looping of past and present, as well as the absence of closure. While acknowledging the impossibility of return - the full retrieval of the past - Switzer employs animation to bridge the psychological distance between these two points in time.
