Franco Silvestro - Il Ponte Contenporanea
Franco Silvestro exhibited his latest works in his third solo show at the gallery. He has taken part in numerous group exhibitions and held several solo shows in both public and private galleries around Europe, including: the Lux and the I.C.A. (London), the Centre d'art Contemporain (Geneva), the Galleria di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (Cesena), the Accademia Britannica (Rome), Raucci Santamaria (Naples), and Artra (Milan).
For this show, the artist depicts actual incidents in several canvases of varying dimensions and video. In his work, Silvestro seeks to portray the harsh reality of the inner city areas in which he has lived. The great metropolises, and the inner city ghettos in particular, continue to be inhospitable places in which the everyday alternates with the terrifying. Silvestro finds expression in events that happen on the streets; in Il Palleggio, for instance, two boys play football with the decapitated head of a girl and then use it as the object of their macabre pastimes. Another work, Ragazzo musulmano (Muslim Boy), portrays a young immigrant praying in a stark, suburban cellar. The video depicts the aimless progress of a drug addict who, to a blues soundtrack, makes his way along a ghetto street, steadying himself against a wall as he starts to totter. The tragic-comic themes that Silvestro touches on translate the horrors of everyday ghetto existence into poetry and scenes of life “as it is”.
