William Xerra Orme

There are two layers to the twenty panel pieces on display by William Xerra: underneath the plastic are photocopies of drawings by the artist’s niece Vittoria (4 years old) and of drawings, writings, and collages by the artist himself; above it, Xerra carries out further subtle interventions, which occasionally run to material objects. Thus, the originally powerful symbols and images become diaphanous, as if the harsh light was absorbing their strength, erasing them. These gently trapped works seem marked with the traces of the passing of two spirits—of William and of Vittoria—whose emphases and means of expressing themselves are different, yet who here walk hand in hand, as if their two contrary perspectives were naturally complementary, along the path of life.
