Marco Salerni - Galleria Senato

Marco Salerni was born in Siena on March 15, 1939, and continues to this day to work from his studio in the Chianti hills. At each developmental stage in his artistic career, Salerni was trained from a young age by highly experienced masters. Subsequent to his first exhibition in Siena in 1960, he participated in numerous group exhibitions and solo shows in cities both in Italy and abroad—Avignon, Wetzelar, Marbella, Valencia, Freiburg, Geneva, and Tokyo—gaining the esteem of the critics and winning numerous prizes. In 1979, Siena City Council gave him the task of painting the Palio, dedicated to Cecco Angiolieri, while in 1980 he completed the great altar panel for the church of Beato Tolomei. Salerni has concentrated his talents on rediscovering the ancient and fascinating technique of encaustic painting, which he employed when decorating the walls of the Sienese church of Beata A. Maria Taigi in Vico Alto with scenes from the gospel. The artist has also completed a series of works dedicated to the life of Saint Catherine, which are presently held at the Rocca a Tentennano in Castiglion d’Orcia. His works can be found in both public and private collections. “His painting,” as art critic Gilberto Madioni has written, “is a harmonious canticle, a union of voices in song. These timorous concerts of the soul—whether depictions of groups, as in his series of historic battle scenes, or lone figures in close-up—do not belong to the world of the mundane.”
