Romano Mussolini
Musician, painter, and poet, Romano Mussolini is best known to the public as a jazz musician.
His interest in painting began in Naples in 1946, but only became a “profession” in 1967.
Unusually for a musician-painter, Mussolini has struck a successful balance between the infinite plurality of sound and the strong color schemes that characterize his vast output.
As he himself claims: “Music and painting are, in my opinion, two dependent and interdependent things.” It is difficult to pigeonhole Mussolini’s work, in any of its evolutionary stages, into one of the many artistic movements of the twentieth century.
His lengthy artistic career concentrates mainly on the figurative, exploring continually changing themes: clowns, landscapes, flowers, and female figures.
The search for something that goes beyond reality, beyond the finite, is a constant in Mussolini’s painting, yet, at the same time, it is possible to perceive a thin thread linking the past to the present, joy to pain, life to death.
Mussolini’s paintings invite the viewer to take hold of life with both hands, as though, in its surprising changeability and originality, it were a voyage of continual discovery.
