Greta Frau Trance di Campagna

Painter and preacher of Beauty, Greta Frau is an eccentric presence or, more accurately, eccentric absence in the arena of Italian contemporary art. The exhibition catalogue, published by Soter, contains writings by critics Giuliana Altea, Marco Magnani, and Marco Senaldi, and a contribution by Italian TV cycling commentator Auro Bulbarelli. Frau, whose real face remains a mystery to most, isrepresented in her public appearances and other dealings by a variety of different people, reputed to be old classmates. These “stand-ins” are followers of the sect founded by Frau, La Classe delle Trance (The Class of Slices), and they all affectionately refer to one another as “Trancia” (“Slice"). The mission of sect members is to spread the teachings of their leader, which focus exclusively and obsessively on the theme of Beauty.
Inaugurating this solo show was Trancia G.96. Besides the inevitable portrait of Trancia G.96 in a schoolgirl tunic—the trademark of belonging to the sect—were a series of black-and-white photographs that portrayed her enveloped by the sweet, wild countryside of Sardinia—the island chosen by Frau, a German by birth, as her country of adoption. Frau’s last series of works, Trance di Compagna, was commonly misprinted in the press and misread by distracted readers as Trance di Campagna. In a bizarre twist, Frau has adopted this mistake as the title and topic of her new work, exploring the countryside and its Beauty, but also the rustic villas that require maintaining and the plants and animals that need taking care of. And then there’s Greta to take care of, unable to take part in the walks and the work because she is differently abled. Trancia G.96, tireless missionary, was there for the inauguration to bear witness to the Beauty of the Followers and of the Countryside. As for signora Frau, however, she hasn’t been spotted yet.
