Alicia Erba Aquazzoni e disinganni

Alicia Erba’s drawings are as strong and rapid as summer storms, while everything around them is cold and sanitized. Like the dawn of a love story, her works are organized in their chaos. Short and sudden, the love stories in our lives consist in gestures, in details: the shoulder strap that slips, the hint of an involuntary smile, the unintentional skin-on-skin contact that provokes a faint shiver. But they also consist in small unkindnesses (I answered your phone, but they hung up at the other end), questions without an answer (what are you thinking about?), pockets rummaged through (matches from a restaurant in Argentario?), numbers found and immediately dialed to understand to whom they belong (man or woman?). When we’re in love, we become suddenly hungry for useless information. These are two bit tricks, but they mean I win. Love makes us noble, because it helps us realize that we really do have a spirit to nurture. In exchange, however, it unveils the worst side of our personalities: as if by magic, we turn ourselves into dogs on heat and bimbos that swap their lipstick (for one that is exactly the same color) when the doorbell rings. Erba’s drawings are like CCTV cameras pointed at ourselves, searching us for an emotion: sentimental yet violent, we are victims of our own desires. The men and women Erba draws have “lost their heads” in order to listen to their hearts—hearts that continue to beat in colored Indian inks on light paper, long after the relationships of these bewildered characters have died.
