Barbara La Ragione Apparenze
A thread of alchemy runs through the photographs of this young Neapolitan artist, which inhabit a borderland somewhere between old and new, between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. The poses required of the protagonists in La Ragione’s latest series of work, Apparenze (Appearances), deliberately hark back to the traditional artistic approach adopted in making daguerreotypes, portraying bodies and the memories they live with on “silvery faces.” Each photograph is structured around perfectly distinct areas and moves within a “second layer of regenerative skin”; every fragment of photograph is laden with a sense of knowledge and experience, leaving the viewer to interpret the present as ambiguity and conflict. La Ragione’s works are hybrids born from elegant fusion. They are not the product of our ever-expanding technologies, but show the effects of postmodernism—son of ancient and magical primitive cultures. All the works are like “ghosts” that bring into play their own spirit, individuality, and life in the photograph.
