Rirkrit Tiravanija Magazine Station n.2

Galleria Emi Fontana kicked off the exhibition season 2000/2001 with a second solo show by Rirkrit Tiravanija—a follow up to that held in 1996. Born in Buenos Aires in 1961, the Thai artist currently divides his time between New York, Berlin, and Bangkok. The works, being shown for the first time in Italy, were those from Tiravanija’s contribution to the 1993 Venice Biennale’s Open section, where he had gained widespread attention by preparing noodles on a hotplate in a canoe.
His art explores the relationship between the artistic condition and society, drawing on the principles of feng-shui —the ancient Chinese method for placing things in a given space—to transform museums and galleries, the denoted locations for art, into environments in which to play music, cook, and interact with the public. For his second solo show at the Galleria Emi Fontana, Tiravanija created a new project: Magazine Station no. 2, in which the three-dimensional space of the installation, the temporal dimension of the Internet, and the printed page were brought together. In one area of the installation it was possible to sit quietly, to read a magazine, and listen to music; in another, an improvised office gave visitors to the gallery the opportunity to suggest new ideas and projects. In recent years, Tiravanija’s work has been exhibited in numerous prestigious locations including as the Venice Biennale, 1999, Sculpture Projects in Munster, 1997, Manifesta 1 in Rotterdam, 1996, and the Migros Museum in Zurich where, in 1998, the artist staged an important solo show.
