Il Ponte Contemporanea - Il Ponte Projects

Gallery view during
the exhibition by
Dino Pedriali, 1994

The Gallery Il Ponte Contemporanea opened in the June of 1993 with a solo exhibition of Ford Beckman which represented a real event for the city; since then, we have always worked with artists who are very young or who have never shown in Italy, by gradually defining the “line” characterizing the gallery. Our shows have a common denominator which is definitely not limited to a personal taste, but we prefer artist who pay most attention to the virtuality of the image and the contemporary reality. The choice happens only after having spoken with the artists, after having understood the reasons behind their work and having discussed the projects together. Naturally it doesn’t mean to influence their work, but rather to fully understand what they are doing and ask them to relate to the space – not only physical – of the gallery. Infact we have two spaces, one bigger where we organize the solo exhibitions and the installations, for example The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1999) of Matt Marello and Laudanum of Tracey Moffatt (1999), while in the space we call Projects, having shown the works most “experimental”.
Our activity has also been characterized by the staging of events – Bodyguard or the meeting between Vettor Pisani end Riccardo Schicchi’s ream, to mention some – which have seen us involved also in the ideation stage. In these years, in addiction to promoting many young artists from our country, we have brought many young foreign artists to Italy for the first time, as Pierre & Gilles, Tracey Moffatt, Inez van Lamsweerde, Erwin Olaf… often receiving the collaboration and help of the foreign countries these artists come from. The small space we have opened near the gallery is an example of this kind of collaboration; it was created to amplify the idea of project and the works shown – created specifically for the venue – are the result of precisely this type of collaboration between artist, gallery and curator.
The managers of the Gallery are Bruno Puiatti and Giuliano Matricardi.
