The Jerwood Gallery is a major initiative of the Jerwood Foundation providing excellent facilities for young dance and theatre companies to develop their work , alongside a high profile public gallery space. Housed in the converted buildings of a Victorian school and opened in September 1998 the Jerwood Space is created by award winning architects Paxton Locher. The Jerwood Gallery incorporates elements of the original structure of the school’s playground buildings creating three interconnecting spaces which amount to 2,6000sqft and open out onto an external Sculpture Space. A cafè, five rehearsal spaces and office spaces for six creative companies are also contained within the complex.
Jerwood Gallery The Jerwood Gallery stages six seven week long exhibitions a year. The primary focus of the artists exhibited at the Jerwood Gallery is “young British”. It is also the home of the prestigious annual Jerwood Painting Prize. Previous exhibitions have included one person exhibition by Glenn Brown (1999), Martin Boyce (2000), Catherine Yass (2001) and Mark Hosking (2001); and group exhibitions such as dumpop (1998-99), Formerly (1999) Natural Dependency (1999) and …comes the spirit (2000). The Jerwood Painting Prize was established by the Jerwood Foundation in 1993 to celebrate the vitality and excellence of painting in the United Kingdom. Past winners include Craigie Aitchinson (1993), Maggi Hambling (1994), Patrick Caulfield (1995), John Hubbard (1996), Gary Hume (1997), Madeleine Strindberg (1998), Prunella Clough (1999). The Jerwood Painting Prize is programmed for May / June each year.
