The Raucci/Santamaria Gallery started exhibiting in April 1992. It was initially founded by Umberto Raucci and Carlo Santamaria to exhibit the work of young emergent Italian Artists.
During 1993, various exhibitions were held including those of Eva Marisaldi and Maurizio Cattelan – both receiving immediate international acclaim. In this initial phase the gallery also exhibited foreign artists in Italian premières : 1993 Mat Collishaw; 1994 Alix Lambert – Tom Friedman – Padraig Timoney ; 1995 David Robbins – Miltos Manetas. In the same period theRaucci/Santamaria Gallery focused too on its own Neapolitan context with the first individual exhibition of artist Betty Bee’s work (1995). In addiction ti private exhibitions, the gallery has also collaborated with institutions such as the Royal Palace in Caserta ( More Than Real 1996) and with the Modena Museum of Photography in an exhibition of both young emergent and internationally acclaimed artists (Open Space 1997)
In addiction the gallery has held significant exhibitions of international artists on their return to Italy which have received international recognition such as Ideal Boys by Mat Collishaw (1997) and Still Smoking by Ugo Rondinone and in 1998 Mario Testino’s first individual exhibition in a private gallery.
On an international level, the Raucci / Santamaria Gallery is continually the forum for artists’ debut in Italy – 1998 Hannah Starkey – 1999 Peter Doig – Michael Raedecker. Furthermore, in a bid to analyse new artistic language and experimentation in contemporary art, the gallery has also turned its attention to the different media used by artists to transform language into art. These include the most disparate genres from video to photography, from installation to sculpture and from drawing to painting.
Once more highlighting new international artists, the Raucci / Santamaria Gallery has been holding individual exhibitions of the work of Ann Lislegaard (2000) Twan Janssen – Glenn Sorensen – John Pilson – Torbjorn Vejvi (2001) together with an exhibition by Tim Rollins and K.O.S. (2001) the first of its kind in Italy.
