Barbara Gillman Gallery

Gallery view

Barbara Gillman Gallery opened in 1979 on Biscayne Boulevard, moved to Lincoln Road in 1992 and has recently moved back, just off Biscayne Boulevard at 55th Street.
Barbara Gillman also opened galleries in Tampa and Boca Raton during the 1980s.
Celebrating it’s 22nd year, the gallery features contemporary American and Latin American painting, sculpture, ceramics, works on paper, mixed media, photography including jazz photography and prints. Since it’s inception in 1979, the gallery has been a major supporter of regional artists as well as those of national and international stature.
In the ‘80s and ‘90s, many of America’s most famous and controversial artists have been exhibited at the Barbara Gillman Gallery. They include Andy Warhol in 1980 and James rosenquist in 1982.
The gallery also had the first exhibit for Andres Serrano, which included his controversial Piss Christ. More recent exhibits included internationally renowned Korean Video Artist Nam June Paik in 1994.
The gallery has always had a special interest in a new talent and the work of Florida artists, many of whom have gone on to become nationally known, including Maria-Martinez-Canas, Gilberto Ruiz and Robert Calvo. The tile floor of the Delta Concourse at the Miami International Airport is a Calvo Art in Public Places commission.
Gillman will continue her “New Talent” series. In the past she has helped introduce new artists such as Deborah Putnoi whose work has been collected by major collectors in the country.
The gallery has been featured in many publications over the years, most recently in Art in America. That magazine’s November 1999 Report from Miami describes Gillman as a pioneer in Contemporary Art.: “She was among the first dealers to exhibit and promote local talent with an eye toward helping the artists achieve wide recognition”.
The latest move to the Soyka complex at 5582 N.E. 4th Court, to a space with a large industrial New York look, will enable Gillman to havr important installations and to bring major exhibits to this area.
