Arndt & Partner was founded in October 1994 in Berlin Mitte – a lively and dynamic gallery centre. On 140 sq. metres, the space is divided into gallery, laboratory and cabinet and does not only function as an exhibition and project space, but can equally accommodate artist talks, lecture, readings and seminars. Apart from regular exhibitions and partecipation at leading art fairs, Arndt & Partner’s expertise and know how is available to cultural institutions and art establishments. Its sister company Artservices - an agency for art and cultural management – offers a wide range of services regarding the development of communication strategies and cultural projects for corporate and private bodies committed to the arts. The gallery is committed to the promotion of contemporary artists of high national and international profile. The variety of the gallery’s artistic positions is also reflected in its exhibition programme. The years 1997/98 were dedicated to a one year project entitled Storytellers – a narrative in eight episodes, which was presented in a former transformer station of 45 sq. metres in the Hackesche Höfe in Berlin Mitte. In 1996 the French artist Sophie Calle was exhibited with her series The Detachment. Created in Berlin, the series of juxtaposed photographies and texts demonstrates the detachment of former GDR’s political monuments, and reveals the complex memories of those who experienced their existence. The exhibition Virus Ausstellung and Berneisteinzimmer by the swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn also represent a climax in the gallery’s exhibition history. The room installations are symptomatic of the artist’s reduced aesthetic – consisting of plastic foil, tape, cartonage, ink pen, aluminium foil, wood and neonlight – and address political topics which we usually prefer to repress.
