Franco Scarano Acqua in bocca
Seven canvases united in one piece; three cruets brimming with water and left to stand on a cold aluminum console; a video. These are the pieces that Franco Scarano has installed as part of his latest solo show at the Dirarte gallery — his third since 1995 — entitled Acqua in bocca. “Minimal” pieces, they render the “maximal” space of the gallery critical.
“There’s too much noise these days; we all need the freedom that silence affords in order to contemplate on, and with, world matters.” (Franco Scarano)
“Sharks, they are sharks these predators of thought. The threat takes on the shape of Jaws in an attempt to force us to keep the water of the title in our mouths and to hold our tongues, to not declare our freedom. Seven aquatic mastiffs, like the seven deadly sins, guard the gallery entrance most effectively. They are nothing more than images on canvas these seven sharks—three yellow, three blue, and one green, leading the troops into battle. Nonetheless, they have a threatening aspect, a warning to all those who cross the threshold. Kill or be killed. There’s no way out, no emergency exit. Franco Scarano amasses many elements from the aquatic kingdom and translates them into eloquent images. Goldfish search desperately for water, but their translucent object of desire has yellowed and dwells in esoteric cruets. Thus, water is a dream in glorious technicolor, an inescapable desire, a constant preoccupation. But it is elsewhere, put to one side on a shelf, consigned to a future memory.” (Enzo Battarra)
