The Art Palm Beach Modern and Contemporary Art Fair, which will run January 11 through January 15 includes 52 exhibitors. Given the political and economic climate in the United States, and the fact that Art Miami (4-8 January) was the first major American art fair since September 11 not to be cancelled, many participants are glad just to see the show goes on in Palm Beach.

In the wake of Art Basel’s cancellation of its Miami Beach exhibition—originally scheduled for December 2001 and postponed until December 2002—the organizers of Art Miami sent out a flurry of e-mails and press releases assuring the public their show would go on, despite September 11th and the ongoing U.S. war against terrorism. The exhibition will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center from Friday, January 4th to Tuesday, January 8th, 2002.

Lesson number one for those contemplating staging an international contemporary
art fair in the future: get more than a contract when signing up participants,
get a deposit. The above-mentioned scenario is exactly what befell the organizers
of Art Basel Miami Beach, which surely contributed to the decision to cancel
the fair which was to be held from December the 12th to the 16th, 2001 in addition
to the stated reasons of the terrorist attacks and increased insurance costs.

Focusing on the latest trends of international art, supporting
public collecting and encouraging private collectors - these are the goals of
the Artissima fair, the annual showdown in Turin that opens to the public
on the 15th of November, and runs to Sunday the 18th.
Now in its eighth year, Artissima is becoming an exclusive reference
point for contemporary art.

Although FIAC has gone ahead with tightened security measures this year, many US collectors and art professionals have decided to stay at home after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington last month. However like Artforum in Berlin two weeks ago, the mood is defiant and in a press release on the 18th of September, COFIAC stated that "this gathering of key players from the international art world will again confirm that art has no borders". With 164 galleries from 44 cities and 16 countries exhibiting at the 28th FIAC, the dealers and artists are keeping the spirit alive for this week despite fears that sales may be hit.
