Sotheby’s third Italian sale, to take place in London on Monday, October 22nd 2001 at 7pm, will have a particular focus on Arte Povera artists, as well as the more established names of Giorgio Morandi, Gino Severini, Lucio Fontana and Piero Manzoni. Alighiero Boetti’s embroidered tapestry Mappa del Mondo is estimated at $ 216,230-288,300 (€ 237,470-316,600), whilst his Aeroplani, a collaborative work between various friends, relatives and acquaintances, who were asked by the artist to fill in sheets of paper with biro strokes, is expected to fetch $ 21,600-28,830 (€ 23,700-31,660). Rapsodie Inepte by Pier Paolo Calzolari, which uses neon lights and tobacco leaves, is estimated at $ 57,660-86,490 and Luciano Fabro’s Italia Cartoccio (Package Italy), a map of Italy transformed with gold, glass, fur and lead is expected to fetch $ 288,310-432,480 (€ 316,620-474,930) whilst Jannis Kounellis’ Untitled, executed in 1960, is estimated at $ 28,832-36,040 (€ 31,650-39,570). Higher priced works include Gino Severini’s Danseuse, painted in 1913, at $ 144,160-216,240 (€ 158,280-237,420) and a Giorgio Morandi, still-life, at $ 201,820-504,560 (€ 221,550-553,850).
