The annual “Dogs in Art” auction held by Doyle, New York in collaboration with Bonhams, London will be held at the William Doyle Galleries in New York on Tuesday the 12th of February 2002, with 300 paintings, drawings and watercolours, prints, sculptures and related dog ephemera. The 19th and 20th century paintings have English, Dutch and US artists accounting for the majority of lots. Leading paintings include Phillip Eustace Stretton’s Sheltering from the rain that carries an estimate of $40,000-60,000 (€46,100-69,130) and A Group of King Charles Spaniels by Samuel Bough estimated at $30,000-40,000 (€34,560-46,090). Dog paintings appeal not only to 19th century art buyers but also to dog lovers who may wish to match an oil on canvas to their own pet. Other key artists in the sale include Maud Earl, John Emms, Valentine Garland, Arthur Wardle and W.H.H. Trood. (Andrew Moore)
