On the 5th of September, Bonhams, London held their Marine sale with the prints and paintings section making a sale total of 90%, although prices were kept low with the majority of works selling from £ 1,450-4,530 (€ 1,635-4,900). Higher priced works which did sell, sold at low end or on reserve with the only works which notably surpassed their estimates being Captain Beechey’s Plymouth Breakwater which sold for $ 21,760 (€ 24,520) against a pre-sale guide of $ 5,800-8,700 (€ 6,540-9,800) and Norman Wilkinson’s steamship Duchess of Argyll which sold for $ 58,000 (€ 65,380) against an estimate of $ 17,400-26,100 (€ 19,600-29,400). The highest selling work was a contemporary work showing three racing yachts off the island of Cowes (off the southern coast of England) which sold at its low end pre-sale price of $ 87,000 (€ 98,000).
