13/09/2001
On the 14th of September 2001, the first contemporary art award in Milan will be presented in the city’s Museo del Presente. Named after the new museum for contemporary art (which is still under construction), the award has been set up by the Council of Milan and will be given to one of 120 participants in the exhibition Milan – Europe 2000: the seeds of the future and presently on view at PAC and Triennale, Milan until the 16th of September. The winner will be chosen by a jury, after a pre-selection of 20 artists are voted by visitors of the exhibition. The award amounts to $ 45,200 (€ 50,000) surpassing Britain’s Turner prize and the Berlin Biennale cash awards. Within the same event, the jury will select an artist who will receive $ 9,050 (€ 10,000), awarded by Sotheby’s. Sotheby’s will also advise the purchasing of art works for the core collection of the Museo del Presente with a budget of $ 140,190 (€ 154,900) made available by the Council of Milan.
