Il Quarto Stato regarded by many Italians as the nation’s most important 19th century artwork, will be returned to Volpedo (Alessandria, in northern Italy) where it was painted a century ago. The painting by Giuseppe Pellizza is currently held at the Civica Galleria Moderna in Milan but will be brought back to the small town. A series of events have been organised in Volpeda to celebrate the centenary of the famous oil on canvas, a symbol of class struggle. Insured for $ 9,000,000 (€ 10,300,000), it will be on view at the artist’s studio, alongside the exhibition "The Quarto Stato and it’s making" which is open until the end of September.
