The five joint winners of the “Praemium Imperiale 2001” have been announced as Korean painter Lee Ufan, the French sculptress Marta Pan, the architect Jean Nouvel, the musician Ornette Coleman and the US playwright Arthur Miller. The award was instituted in 1987 by Tokyo’s Japan Art Association in memory of Emperor Nobuhito Takamatsu and consists of 5 awards of 15 million Yen each ($ 127,300, € 138,200) to be given to people who have distinguished themselves in the Arts: painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and theatre or cinema. The announcement of the winners was made on the 13th of September in five cities (Berlin, London, New York, Paris and Rome). The awards will be conferred on the 25th of October in Tokyo.
