The Tate gallery, London has confirmed that Madonna will present this year's Turner Prize on the 9th of December, 2001. The prize, which is presented annually to a British contemporary artist will be awarded at the Tate Britain and will be broadcast live on the UK television station Channel 4. The gallery approached the US pop singer, Madonna (who now lives in London) in its efforts to popularise the competition. In March 2000 she attended a special rededication ceremony for Tate Britain after the opening of its sister gallery Tate Modern. Then in April of this year, she lent Tate Modern a painting, Self-Portrait with Monkey, by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, for the surrealist exhibition “Surrealism: Desire Unbound”. The Turner Prize is worth $ 29,340 (€ 31,850) with Richard Billingham, Martin Creed, Isaac Julien and Mike Nelson on the shortlist.
