The Cleveland Museum of Art announced the plans for its first major expansion in more than 30 years with an estimated project cost of $ 170,000,000 (€ 187,591,241). The project will add approximately 102,000 square feet of new space, while renovating and unifying the four existing buildings to create an overall area of 491,000 square feet. Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly’s design for the CMA will allow for a reorientation of the museum's world-famous collection, including its holdings of Asian art and a growing number of contemporary acquisitions. The design phase will begin immediately and continue through to the end of 2003 with construction starting in the summer of 2004. The extension is planned to be completed in 2007 or 2008.
