A pair of oils by Alessandro Magnasco, depicting Saint Anthony the hermit in prayer in a wood and Saint Paul the hermit in prayer in a wood will be presented at the Old Master Paintings sale at Sotheby’s Milan on the 4th of December. The landscapes that provide the setting for the figures recall the style of Antonio Peruzzini, who worked with Magnasco. The pair (each painting measuring 110 x 88 cm) is estimated at $ 54,700-68,300 (€ 61,900-77,400). Another work that will catch the buyers’ eye at this auction is The entrance of the animals in the arc, an oil on canvas (97 x 134 cm) by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, called Grechetto, estimated at $ 91,200-136,800 (€ 103,200-154,900). Also of note among the works on sale are: Hercules and Cacus by Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini (estimate $ 18,200-27,300, € 20,650-30,900); The sacrifice of Moses by Corrado Giaquinto, a painter of the Neapolitan School (estimate $ 18,200-27,300, € 20,650-30,900) and Love the winner by Orazio Riminaldi, a pupil of Lanfranco (estimate $ 18,200-27,300, € 20,650-30,900).
