Police in Spain have arrested 6 people charged with the theft of more than twenty artworks from the Madrid collection of Esther Koplowitz, reputedly the wealthiest businesswoman in the country. The works were stolen on the 9th of August (see daily gabrius news 21/08/2001) and include The Donkey's Fall and The Swing, by Spanish artist Francisco Goya, Eragny landscape by Camille Pissarro and The temptation of St Anthony by Pieter Brueghel. The value of the stolen artworks was reported to be “incalculable” by the Spanish newspaper “El Mundo” and are believed by local police to be now in Denmark. However the suspects, have been temporarily released and include a security guard who was employed by Koplowitz. (Andrew Moore)
